The Methodist University Ghana (MUG) has launched an endowment fund to promote research and scholarship and position the University as a Centre of Excellence.\u00a0<\/p>

The Fund will be used to facilitate the\u00a0establishment of a scholarship scheme for\u00a0students, including disadvantaged students\u00a0and for those from underserved areas and\u00a0attracting and retaining high calibre academic\u00a0and administrative staff.\u00a0<\/p>

In support of the Fund, the Methodist Church\u00a0Ghana donated GH\u20b51million in aid of the\u00a0Fund with Dr. Joseph Siaw-Agyepong, the\u00a0founder of the Jospong Group, also\u00a0presented GH\u20b51million to the Managers of the\u00a0Fund.\u00a0<\/p>

Madam Eunice Ametor Williams, a former staff\u00a0member of the University, also donated two\u00a0plots of land to the university as part of her\u00a0support.\u00a0<\/p>

Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, the\u00a0Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church\u00a0Ghana, launching the Fund, said it was an\u00a0opportunity to provide a ladder or a shoulder\u00a0for majority of the students to access quality\u00a0education.\u00a0<\/p>

He said the Methodist Church since it was established had never ceased to bring about\u00a0quality education to the people, adding that\u00a0the standard set by the Church over the years\u00a0had always been admired by all.\u00a0<\/p>

The \u00a0Presiding Bishop said, \u201cwe are prepared\u00a0to continue to provide quality education to the\u00a0people in the spirit of Excellence, Morality and\u00a0Service.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Professor Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson, the\u00a0Vice-Chancellor, MUG said the Endowment\u00a0Fund would establish specific Endowed Chairs\u00a0for Scholars in Residence and Visiting\u00a0Scholars and it would apply funds towards\u00a0capital and infrastructural projects.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIts mission, therefore, is to promote academic\u00a0excellence, Morality and Service through\u00a0teaching and research with a Christian\u00a0worldview,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>

Prof. Bondzi-Simpson said it would create a\u00a0lasting collaboration between the Methodist\u00a0Church Ghana and the University in the areas\u00a0of professional development and continuous\u00a0education, as well as extension services to the\u00a0Church and society.\u00a0<\/p>

It will provide the space for capacity\u00a0development for both Ministerial and Lay\u00a0Ministries, including programmes specifically\u00a0tailored for church groups and organisations\u00a0within and outside the Methodist Church.\u00a0<\/p>

The Vice-Chancellor said the Fund would\u00a0provide integrated modern information and\u00a0communication technology facilities and\u00a0develop linkages with local and foreign\u00a0institutions and forging partnerships with\u00a0industry.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIt will create an organizational culture that\u00a0enhances efficiency, discipline and\u00a0commitment, improve management capacity\u00a0and institutional governance structures and\u00a0support the University\u2019s strategic aspirations,\u201d\u00a0he added.\u00a0<\/p>

He said their training was to turn the heart and\u00a0mind of students and staff to address all the\u00a0challenges facing the country.\u00a0<\/p>

He said management wanted to build a World\u00a0Class University that extended its services to\u00a0all both members of the Methodist Church and\u00a0non-members.\u00a0<\/p>

Dr Siaw-Aygepong commended the\u00a0leadership of the University for the efforts of\u00a0championing quality education in the country.\u00a0<\/p>

He called on all to endeavour to support the\u00a0Endowment Fund to enable more students to\u00a0benefit and access quality education.\u00a0<\/p>

During MUG\u2019s 10th Anniversary celebration in\u00a02010, a thanksgiving service was held and an\u00a0appeal for funds was made to serve as a seed\u00a0for an Endowment Fund for the then\u00a0University College.\u00a0<\/p>

In the initial appeal, GH\u00a237,710.10 was\u00a0realized and subsequently, led by the then\u00a0Principal, Very Rev. Prof. Samuel K.\u00a0Adjepong, staff agreed to make some\u00a0contributions through monthly deductions from\u00a0their salaries for six months.\u00a0<\/p>

This yielded an amount of GH\u00a243,970.00.\u00a0Students also contributed an amount of\u00a0GH\u00a210,774.00, bringing the total contributions\u00a0to GH\u00a2105,510.00, which was invested at\u00a0Ecobank.\u00a0<\/p>

As of August 2018, the face value of\u00a0the investment was GH\u00a2 172,347.00, from\u00a0GH\u00a2 105,510.10.\u00a0<\/p>

As part of the then National Accreditation\u00a0Board\u2019s requirement for Colleges applying for\u00a0autonomy status to have\u00a0substantial investment to ensure their financial\u00a0sustainability, the above investment\u00a0(GH\u00a2172,347.00) was transferred to the\u00a0Prudential Bank in August 2018 to be added\u00a0to other investments to meet the requirement\u00a0of the National Accreditation Board and the\u00a0Ghana Tertiary Education\u00a0Commission.\u00a0<\/p>
