MUG APPOINTS VICE-CHANCELLOR

The Council of Methodist University Ghana (MUG) has appointed Prof. William Baah-Boateng, as Vice-Chancellor of Methodist University Ghana for an initial term of four years with effect from August 1, 2025.

Professor William Baah-Boateng is one of the leading economists in Ghana and Africa. He is celebrated for his expertise in labour economics, development policy, and institutional transformation and has over two-and-half decades of experience in teaching, research, administration and policy engagement. He is Professor of Economics and is the first to be appointed to that rank of Full Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Ghana Legon, in 50 years. He holds a PhD in Economics and had his education at the University of Ghana, Legon and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

 

Professor Baah-Boateng has held pivotal roles in both academic and policy spaces. He is currently the Non-Resident Director of the African Centre for Advanced Studies (ACAS). He is an Editor of the Ghanaian Journal of Economics, a key platform for advancing economic scholarship in West Africa. He also served as Senior Research Fellow at the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), and as Long-Term Advisor to Ghana’s Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and the Presidential Committee on Emolument in the determination of the salaries and conditions of service of Article 71 Office Holders in Ghana. He is a Consultant to several international organisations, including the ILO, the World Bank, AfDB, JICA, DANIDA and multiple United Nations agencies.

In terms of academic engagements, Professor Baah-Boateng served as the Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana for two consecutive terms. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at the International Centre for Development and Decent Work (ICDD), University of Kassel, Germany, the African Economic Research Consortium’s (AERC) Joint Facility for Electives in Nairobi, and the United Nations Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) in Dakar. He was also appointed as a Senior Research Fellow of the Centre for African Studies at Harvard University in 2017. These appointments affirm the global scholarly stature of Professor Baah-Boateng.

Professor Baah-Boateng has over 75 publications in the form of books, edited books, refereed journal articles, technical reports, working papers, and blogs. He gas also supervised dozens of PhD, M. Phil and MA theses.

Professor Baah-Boateng is a staunch Methodist. He was baptised in 1983 and confirmed in 1993 at the Wesley Methodist Society, Akomadan in the Ashanti Region. He currently worships at the Ebenezer Methodist Cathedral in Madina, where he served as Head Steward between 2017 and 2022.

Professor Baah-Boateng brings a powerful blend of academic rigour, policy innovation, and thought leadership that has shaped both national and continental economic landscapes to the position and we welcome him to the Methodist University Ghana fraternity!!
