The Chancellor

The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu is the Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana and the Chancellor of the Methodist University Ghana (MUG). He is the Baëta-Grau Professor of Contemporary African Christianity and Pentecostal/Charismatic Theology at Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon, Ghana. He served as the President of the Seminary between 2018 and 2024, having taught there since1994.

The Most Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Religion and Sociology and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Religious Studies from the University of Ghana. He also holds a PhD in Theology from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. His doctoral research focused on African Christianity, Pentecostal/Charismatic movements, and World Christianity.

The Most Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu an ordained minister of The Methodist Church Ghana began his candidacy for ministry in 1982 and completed his pastoral formation in 1986 and commissioned as minister of the Methodist Church in June the same year. His ministry covers pastoral leadership, theological education, academic administration, and recently episcopal oversight, culminating in his elevation to the high office of Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana.

He is a member of the Lausanne Theology Working Group and a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is widely recognized for his scholarship in Contemporary African Christianity, Pentecostal/Charismatic Theology, World Christianity, and Mission Studies. He has also served as a Visiting Scholar to Harvard University, Luther Seminary, and the Asbury Theological Seminary, all in the USA.

He is married to Mrs. Theodora Asamoah-Gyadu, and they have three adult children: Theophil, Griselda, and Emmanuel.
